Chrome Direct Visits Labeled as Not Provided
I discovered today that Chrome is potentially labeling direct traffic as organic, “not provided” traffic in Google Analytics.
I tested this on another domain I own that is set up for testing purposes. That site is not indexed and usually receives no traffic, so I know the visits came from me.
I don’t think this is groundbreaking by any extent, but it’s interesting to me. This is what I assume from this finding:
- Direct traffic numbers may be skewed lower for repeat visitors in Chrome
- (not provided) numbers may be inflated
- Search traffic Google reports may be inflated
